Don't worry! God knew millions of people would feel this way, that's why the bible tells us about the thief who died on the cross next to Jesus. This man pursued things of life which led to a sentence of crucifixion on a cross. However, before his arrest and sentence he probably heard about Jesus because His fame had spread far and wide throughout the entire region. And like many of us, he heard of the man, the name of Jesus but chose not to follow Him nor His teachings. Likewise, today nearly everyone has hear the name of Jesus, associating Him with religion but hear His name used in a negative manner because here in the United States, television shows and movies requiring their actors to speak and use the name of Jesus as a cuss word for their shows rather than showing Him honor and respect. Regardless, God through His infinite grace and mercy still loves everyone and desires all to be saved and enter heaven (1Timothy 2:4).
Regarding the thief, we don't know when, where or how long it took, but apparently God had been working on his heart. Jesus tells us in John 6:44, that no one can come to Me unless the Father (God) who sent Me draws that person, and I will raise that person up (to be in heaven) on the last day. This "drawing" is what happen to the thief because while he was dying on the cross he verbally rebuked the other criminal on the cross next to Jesus, saying in Luke 23:40-44, “Do you not even fear God, even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man (Jesus) has done nothing wrong.” Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise, (Heaven).”
So, with minimum knowledge of Jesus, no baptism, no church attendance, drenched in wretched behavior, this thief took advantage of the great opportunity beside him and allowed God to change his heart, he received forgiveness then acted upon his new faith in Jesus and found everlasting life! Therefore, we see it is possible to go to heaven without knowing much about Jesus.
Needless to say, had thief been alive after this conversion, as a new believer in Christ, he would have experience inner spiritual desires to get baptized (as a public declaration of rebirth in Christ), seek out fellowship with other believes and venture to follow the teachings of Jesus. These activities to some degree indicate a sincere yearning to know more about God and your final destination in heaven.
